Copropraxia involves obscene or inappropriate gestures, such as flipping off (middle finger gestures), grabbing the groin, or mimicking socially unacceptable actions. Like other tics, copropraxia is involuntary, though it can be distressing and embarrassing due to social consequences.

Did you know? The earliest written account of what could be considered copropraxia comes from a book called Malleus Maleficarum (also known as the Hammer of Witches). The book was written in the year 1487!

Examples of Copropraxia-related tics

Examples of tics of inappropriate or obscene nature include:

  • Showing the middle finger- often called ‘flipping off’
  • Grabbing, touching or pointing to the groin or genitals/buttocks region
  • Spitting in public
  • Kissing people or things
  • Thrusting movements 
  • Mocking or offensive gestures towards people, cultures, ethnicities or religions
  • Making sexual hand signs
1 — Once a day or less 2 — A few times per day 3 — Several times throughout the day 4 — Most of the day 5 — Almost all day, every day
