Dystonic tics in Tourette syndrome

Dystonic tics are slower and more prolonged than other motor tics and involve sustained muscle contractions that can lead to abnormal postures or twisting movements.

Did you know? The 1973 movie The Exorcist has been speculated to actually involve Tourette syndrome. Many of the movements made throughout the movie could be considered dystonic tics.

Oct 21, 2025: a reader logged Dystonic tics involving Multiple regions (complex motor) at a food venue.  

Example scenario: sitting in a restaurant, with the chin locking downward toward the chest for a prolonged period. Not only does this cause problems with eating, it can also be very embarrassing and attract unwanted attention.

1 — Once a day or less 2 — A few times per day 3 — Several times throughout the day 4 — Most of the day 5 — Almost all day, every day
