Researcher Kieron O’Connor discussed cognitive tics in 2005, describing intrusive thoughts, words, songs, phrases and mental images that can be difficult to dismiss.

A 2021 study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine examined cognitive tic-like phenomena in 227 people with Tourette syndrome, finding that 34 participants (15%) had experienced them. 

A 2021 review titled Challenges in the Diagnosis and Assessment in Patients with Tourette Syndrome discussed the ongoing debate over whether cognitive tics should be considered distinct from obsessive thoughts.
